Agency chief says ‘Better You, Better Ohio!’ will boost worker health, workplace safety.
COLUMBUS — Officials with Ohio’s insurance fund for injured workers began canvassing the state Thursday to announce a new, free workplace wellness program that targets workers who are at greater risk for on-the-job injuries.
Called Better You, Better Ohio! and sponsored by the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC), the program’s goals are to boost employee health, reduce workplace injuries, and save employers money on medical, legal and other costs associated with injury claims and poor health.
“Research shows that healthy workers are less likely to be injured on the job, and if they are injured, they tend to have a faster, fuller recovery than workers with existing health challenges,” said BWC Administrator/CEO Sarah Morrison. “A healthy workforce contributes to a healthy business, so if we can create that environment across this state, Ohio will be better for it.”
Morrison said Better You, Better Ohio! will target employees of businesses with 50 or fewer workers in construction, manufacturing, agriculture and other industries that experience higher injury rates on average than others. Funded by BWC’s strong investment returns and operated by ActiveHealth Management, the program will be available Feb. 1.
BWC business consultants will unveil program details and encourage enrollment in multiple stops around Ohio that conclude Feb. 2.
“Enrollment is a simple, paperless process, and there is no charge to employers or employees,” Morrison said. “All we’re asking of employers is to help spread the word. It’s the right thing to do for workers and their families, and it just makes good sense from a business perspective.”
